On page optimization of your website is critical for success when ranking your website. It...

On page optimization of your website is critical for success when ranking your website. It doesn’t matter how many backlinks you build or how much content you have if you are hurting yourself with poor on page optimization. In fact, it is estimated that on page optimization accounts for 20% of ranking factors for Google. Here are some tips to make sure your website is a website that search engines will love.

1. Make sure your main keyword is in the title of your website. Google places high importance on title tags and it is crucial that your main keyword is not only in your title, but at the beginning of your title. For example on the site: http://antisnoringdevicesnow.com, the keyword “anti snoring devices” is listed in the title – not once but twice. Besides content, the title tag is the single most important on-page SEO element.

2. Make sure your main keyword is also listed in your meta description and keyword tags. Now, it’s true that Google doesn’t pay much attention to meta keyword tags anymore, but the description is still vital for persuading a user to click on your link. For best on page optimization, your meta descriptions and keywords should be unique for each page and your description should be under 255 characters.

3. Include your main keyword in your H1 title tags. In recent years, Google has given more importance to h1 tags than keyword and description meta tags. It views an h1 tag as an important part of a webpage. Therefore, for proper on page optimization, it’s important to not only use your main keyword in your H1 tag, but to make sure the H1 tag is towards the top of the site, and that you only have one H1 tag per post.

4. Have unique, relevant content on your site. Google doesn’t want spammy content that is terribly written or copied from another site. They want quality content that elevates the user experience. When blogging, try to have a new article at least once a week and make sure it is at least 400-500 words in length. If you can post a new post 3 times per week, Google will love that even more. Because bounce rate is also an important factor for Google rankings, the better quality content you have, the longer a user will stay on your site thus increasing your SERP ranking.

5. Your posts should have a keyword density of at least 2-3%. What that means is: if your keyword is anti snoring devices and you have a 500 word article, your keyword needs to be mentioned in your post at least 10 times. Your keyword should also be mentioned in the first paragraph AND the last paragraph for prime on page optimization. Don’t mention your keyword too much, or the little Google bot will consider it a spam article and won’t be happy.

6. Have external links on your site. This may seem backward, but outgoing links show search engines that you are adding value for your visitors by providing them with links to additional information and this in turn adds velocity and authority to your site. For effective on page optimization, link your main keyword to only ONE external link per post, and make it a no follow link with the rel=”nofollow” attribute. Also make sure you are linking to a high quality website. And remember: not only are outbound links valuable for on page optimization, but they are also valuable for building relationships with other websites.

7. Have your main keyword bolded at least once in a post but no more than 3 times. When search engines such as Google see a word in bold, it assumes you are giving more weight to that word than other words in the post which in turn, gives you more SEO juice. The same goes for words that are underlined and in italics as well. But again, don’t overdo, or this will send off a red flag to the Google gods.

These are only a few of many tips you can use to make your website SEO friendly. If you want a great plugin that will do all of this on page optimization for you, check out the Easy WP SEO plugin for wordpress. This plugin uses a complex algorithm and has over 70 different options you can configure so that your website can have perfect on page optimization.

Looking for some more ways to improve your SEO tasks? Google may have just what you need to make your life easier. Here are 5 of my favorite Google SEO tools to improve your website:

1. Follow Finder
This tool analyzes following and follower lists on Twitter to find people you might want to follow. You just enter the profile name of someone and the tool will return a list of people also on Twitter. This tool is handy if you are trying to get into a new market and you want to build relationships with key influencers.

2. Google Sets
With this tool, you input a keyword and it will return a list of keywords which are similar. Very helpful for brainstorming and for building a list of keywords for site optimization.

3. Google Webmaster Tools
If you aren’t using Google webmaster tools – you should be! It offers a wealth of information on your site such as crawl errors, top search queries, and conversion rates. It’s a powerful tool that provides key diagnostic data about your site and can help to increase your search engine rankings.

4. Google Trends
Reflects what keywords people are searching for on a daily basis. By using this search trend data, you can get us insight into how important a topic is to the public and get quite a bit of insight into human behavior and reactions. This tool is especially useful when researching an unknown market and finding relevant backlinks for your site.

5. Google Wonder Wheel
The Google Wonder Wheel has been around since 2009 and is great for finding related keywords. It’s meant to provide a more visual display of relevant search terms for the user. If you are looking for more long-tail keywords to drive massive amounts of targeted traffic to your particular niche, the Google Wonder Wheel will help you with new keyword ideas for your marketing campaign.

If you haven’t already heard, Google is now counting site speed as a ranking factor for websites. There are two primary ways Google now measures speed: how a page responds to Googlebot and the load time which is measured by the Google Toolbar. If you want to find out how fast your site is loading, go to Google Webmaster tools and click on the “labs” section to see a page speed report. Google will tell you how fast your site is loading and offer ways to improve. But remember, don’t sacrifice quality for fast loading times. Content is still King and unless you site is painfully slow, you most likely won’t be heavily affected by this ranking change.

You have just created your online store with thousands of products, beautiful pictures and keyword...

You have just created your online store with thousands of products, beautiful pictures and keyword rich descriptions. But for some reason, you aren’t converting as many sales as you would like. It could be the product you are selling, but more than likely, your store does not have optimum usability. Here are some ways to make your store more user-friendly and increase your online sales:

1. Have a visible search box – Some people enjoy browsing through an online store, but the majority are “search dominant”. They want to find what they’re looking for quickly rather than browsing through hundreds of products. Make sure you have a simple and functional search box that is prominent and consistent on every page. Without it, your customers will immediately leave and move on to your competitor’s website.

2.	Have helpful search results – There is nothing more frustrating than doing a search and getting a page of results that have nothing to do with a chosen keyword. Make sure your search results are accurate, support common misspellings and offer alternative search terms to make the user’s search as quick and painless as possible.

3.	Make registration optional-not required – When a customer wants to buy a product, the worst thing you can do is to force them to register. This creates a barrier between the customer and the check-out page and can easily persuade them to abandon their shopping cart. Instead, show them the benefits of registering, such as convenience and increased security, while still leaving the choice to the customer. You will be surprised on how much your sales increase and how many of your visitors actually do register on your site.

4.	Be upfront about out of stock items- If you don’t have an item in stock, let the customer know right away-not 2 days later through email. When a customer knows immediately that an item is on backorder, they may not be happy, but at least you avoid the possibility of that customer canceling their order or complaining to customer service. Not only being upfront about inventory, but notifying a customer when an item has been restocked, makes for an easier and more friendly shopping experience.

5.	Have enough products on each page - A great way to increase sales is to get customers to look at more products at any given visit. If you have 100 products and only 10 products per page, you are making your visitors do more work. Try to display as many products as possible, (without overloading them) or better yet, give the customer the option of how many products they want to view at once.

Ultimately, your shopping cart should be easy for your visitors to use and persuade them to be a repeat customer. Eliminating common usability problems from your website is the first step to increasing your bottom line.

.htaccess may be a simple ASCII text file, but it’s a powerful tool used on an Apache Web Server which can alter the configuration of your files and directories. With some simple rewrite rules in your .htaccess file, you can do many advanced features from creating custom error pages to setting timezones and emails. Here are 6 of my favorite .htaccess tricks:

SEO Friendly 301 permanent redirects for bad/old links and moved links (replace the link in the example with your own)

Redirect 301 /d/file.html http://www.bcdesignsit.com/r/file.html

Prevent Files image/file hotlinking and bandwidth stealing

RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(www.)?askapache.com/.*$ [NC]
RewriteRule .(gif|jpg|swf|flv|png)$ /feed/ [R=302,L]

Block IPs – I have used this one in the past to prevent a stalker from viewing my site

allow from all
deny from 132.176.13.123
deny from 123.14

Rewrite underscores to hyphens for SEO: According to Matt Cutts from Google, dashes or hyphens are better to use instead of underscores for SEO. If your 200 page site uses underscores in the files names, this .htaccess rule can change that easily and quickly.

Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule !.(html|php)$ – [S=4]
RewriteRule ^([^_]*)_([^_]*)_([^_]*)_([^_]*)_(.*)$ $1-$2-$3-$4-$5 [E=uscor:Yes]
RewriteRule ^([^_]*)_([^_]*)_([^_]*)_(.*)$ $1-$2-$3-$4 [E=uscor:Yes]
RewriteRule ^([^_]*)_([^_]*)_(.*)$ $1-$2-$3 [E=uscor:Yes]
RewriteRule ^([^_]*)_(.*)$ $1-$2 [E=uscor:Yes]
RewriteCond %{ENV:uscor} ^Yes$
RewriteRule (.*) http://d.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Password Protect Directories and Files:

# to protect a file

<Files secure.php>
AuthType Basic
AuthName “Prompt”
AuthUserFile /home/path/.htpasswd
Require valid-user
</Files>

# password-protect a directory

AuthType basic
AuthName “This directory is protected”
AuthUserFile /home/path/.htpasswd
AuthGroupFile /dev/null
Require valid-user

Redirect an old domain to a new domain

# redirect from old domain to new domain

RewriteEngine On
